Strandings Update 20250731

2025, July 27. South Africa, Kayser’s Beach. A 12.2m male humpback whale washed ashore in an advanced state of decomposition.

2025, July 27. Ireland, Castlelacken, Kilcummin Back Strand, Co. Mayo. Two rare deep-diving True’s beaked whales were stranded. The mother whale died within moments of stranding, while the calf managed to free itself and swim away. Unlikely to have survived.

2025, July 26-27. Finland, Gulf of Finland, along the shores of Porvoo and Loviisa in southern Finland. Nineteen seals were discovered dead. Fifteen of the seals were found around the Pellinge archipelago near Porvoo, and four more were located in the Loviisa area. No signs of external injuries or visible trauma have been found on the animals. Preliminary findings revealed no discolouration, wounds or other visible indicators that could suggest a cause of death.

2025, July 28. Philippines, West Philippine Sea, Bataan, Morong. A decapitated head of a dolphin was recovered.

2025, July 28. Scotland, 2 Miles Off Uig, Skye, Highland. Short-Beaked Common Dolphin. Located floating in a state of slight decomposition.

2025, July 29. Philippines, Panay Gulf, Brgy. Rizal, Guimbal, Iloilo. A pilot whale locally referred to as rumba-rumba was found stranded along the shoreline.

2025, July 29. Scotland, Argyll And Bute, Balephuil, Tiree. Harbour Porpoise found dead in a state of moderate decomposition.

2025, July 29. Scotland, Highland, At Sea Off Rubh' Arisaig. Cetacean in an advanced state of decomposition.

2025, July 29. Japan, Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture, Eastern Japan. A mass stranding of four Cachalots (sperm whales). First reported at 6pm 14 hours before the earthquake. They were 7 to 8 meters long. See: July 21 Fireball, over Kouzushima Island in Izu Islands 110km SW of the stranding. Over.
