Science Held Hostage: The Real Reason Behind the Attack on Our Ocean Sensors

A deeply troubling narrative is unfolding along our coastlines. The US federal government has begun aggressively dismantling the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative (OOI)—a vital $386 million network of more than 900 deep-sea sensors that has provided real-time tracking of our oceans for over a decade.

To justify freezing clean energy and blinding our scientists, the administration has weaponized a completely fabricated scapegoat: offshore wind farms.

The official line claims that offshore wind turbines are responsible for the tragic spike in whale strandings along the East Coast. This claim is not only entirely unsupported by data, but it also conveniently covers up the double standard of an administration that simultaneously stripped Endangered Species Act protections to expand loud, disruptive oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

The truth is simple: Wind farms are not killing whales, but blinding our oceans will absolutely prevent us from protecting them.

The Anatomy of a Strawman: Wind vs. Reality

For years, the well-being of marine life has been used as a political cudgel against renewable energy. Yet, every major marine authority—including the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and independent research bodies—has repeatedly stated there is zero causal link between offshore wind development and whale deaths.

So, what is actually causing the "Unusual Mortality Events" among our great whales? The necropsies tell a clear, tragic story:

Vessel Strikes: Massive commercial ships colliding with whales in busy shipping lanes.

Fishing Gear Entanglement: Whales becoming trapped in heavy, abandoned, or active commercial fishing lines.

Climate-Driven Shifts: Rapidly warming oceans are shifting the distribution of prey (like menhaden and krill). This forces starving whales into highly trafficked coastal waters and industrial zones where they are far more vulnerable to ship strikes.

By blaming wind turbines, the administration attempts to solve two political goals at once: satisfying fossil fuel donors by halting green energy, and feigning environmental concern while doing absolutely nothing to address the real, human-caused threats killing these animals.

What We Lose When the Sensors Go Dark

Pulling these deep-sea sensor moorings out of the water is a massive "economic and scientific own goal". Over 90% of the cost of these projects went into building and physically anchoring them to the seafloor. Keeping them running is relatively cheap, but removing them creates a devastating scientific blind spot.

These acoustic and environmental sensors are our ears and eyes beneath the waves. They track marine heatwaves, oxygen depletion, changes in biodiversity, and the catastrophic slowdown of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC).

Furthermore, these deep-sea sensor networks are highly sensitive to sudden acoustic changes. Just recently, seismometers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution captured the intense sonic boom and acoustic vibrations of a meteor airburst over Cape Cod Bay. While individual, localized atmospheric blasts like this aren't driving global stranding trends, the ability to record these distinct, profound acoustic events underscores just how vital a fully instrumented ocean is. Sound waves travel incredibly fast and far underwater; without these deep-sea arrays, we lose the capability to map the total acoustic landscape of the ocean—including the severe, chronic noise pollution from commercial shipping and fossil fuel exploration that genuinely threatens marine mammal navigation.

Playing for Keeps: The War on Climate Data

The decision to defund the OOI isn’t a budget-saving measure; it’s an attempt to break the thermometer. As oceanographers have noted, it is a deliberate effort to eliminate the baseline data that proves climate change, rising sea levels, and marine degradation are happening. If you don't collect the data, you can pretend the problem doesn't exist.

Worse still, this policy breaks the chain of intergenerational scientific knowledge. By defunding these programs, specialized teams of ocean engineers and researchers are being laid off or scattered. Even if a future administration resolves to reverse this damage, rebuilding the physical infrastructure and re-recruiting that lost institutional expertise will take years and cost taxpayers hundreds of millions of unnecessary dollars.

Our oceans are in crisis, and the creatures that inhabit them are screaming for help. Turning off the very tools we use to listen to them—while inventing fairy tales about wind turbines to protect corporate oil interests—is an insult to science and a death sentence for endangered marine life.

We must call out this policy for what it is: political theater masquerading as conservation. Science requires data, data requires sensors, and our marine life requires the truth.

Why Do Mass Whale Strandings Occur?

Mass whale strandings—where multiple whales beach themselves, often resulting in death—have long puzzled scientists and conservationists. In January 2024 Whale Stranding Report, presents a hypothesis: many of these events are closely correlated with meteoric phenomena, including meteor showers, airbursts, and impacts from meteoroids. Drawing on 184 years of global data, eyewitness accounts, and satellite observations, the theory proposes that the atmospheric disturbances caused by bolides (large meteoroids) play a significant role in triggering both panic and physical trauma among whale pods. Over 200 mass whale strandings worldwide have been convincingly linked to meteor activity so far. Using this method over the last two years, around 30 mass whale strandings have been predicted after meteor activity. It is also the only theory that holds up over time, explaining why mass whale strandings have occurred for millions of years. 

The meteor theory categorizes strandings into three primary types based on the meteoric cause:

  1. Meteor Showers (40%): These events often trigger "panic strandings," particularly through the generation of low-frequency electromagnetic waves known as electrophonic sounds. These sounds, produced by meteors disintegrating in the atmosphere, can be perceived by marine mammals like whales and dolphins—creatures highly reliant on acoustic navigation. Repeated and intense exposure to such sounds during meteor showers can disorient or distress entire pods, especially when they are near land, ultimately leading to mass strandings.

  2. Airbursts (55%): These are explosions of meteoroids high in the atmosphere that produce intense concussive force, sudden pressure changes, and potentially lethal sonic booms. Whales caught in the vicinity may suffer from internal injuries such as brain trauma, inner ear damage, and pulmonary hemorrhaging—injuries that impair their ability to navigate or dive. Many die at sea, never seen, but some injured individuals may make desperate attempts to reach shallower waters, stranding as a last resort to breathe or rest.

  3. Meteor Impacts (<5%): Though less common, direct impacts with the ocean generate intense shockwaves and underwater turbulence. These can scatter pods, kill marine life instantly, or damage whales enough to result in delayed strandings over time and distance.

The report emphasizes the complexity of these interactions, especially airburst-related events. Unlike panic strandings, which result in pods beaching together, trauma from airbursts often leads to "split strandings," where individuals are found along extensive stretches of coastline—evidence of pod fragmentation and varying levels of injury.

This report also critiques traditional explanations—such as navigational error, illness, or naval sonar interference—noting that they cannot fully account for the scale, timing, and recurrence patterns of many strandings. The theory argues that meteor-related incidents often coincide with reports of mass bird and fish deaths, strengthening the case for a broader environmental effect triggered by celestial activity.

Importantly, it also highlights the “data blind” in marine environments, where many meteoric events go unrecorded due to limitations in satellite coverage and observation bias toward populated areas. This invisibility underscores how much of Earth's meteor interaction—particularly over the ocean—remains unknown, complicating efforts to link celestial events with ecological consequences.

The report concludes with a call for enhanced research, global data collaboration, and public awareness. If this theory holds, understanding meteoric influences on marine life could profoundly impact conservation efforts and reshape our understanding of Earth’s ecological dynamics—offering new ways to protect whales, the oceans’ vital custodians.

Global Alert System for cetacean stranding

Given the different parameters involved in issuing these alerts, I'm working on a color-coded worldwide Marine Animal Disturbance Alert system to make it simpler, more accurate and easier to follow. Inputs such as migration and habits need to be taken into consideration. Also, meteor airbursts of all energy outputs, heights and fireballs of all varieties need to be taken for what they are, diverse. Because this is relatively new, as in the last couple of years, new situations have come along that challenge what I want to portray in the alert issued, so this will be easier and more accurate. This new system will be shown like the example below (not the current situation) and will be presentable once software is involved. I gather this will change as it evolves. I will also issue dates to coincide with alert length, because cetaceans can come ashore many months after injury. This in itself can be confusing when events overlap.

Controlling the narrative

2024, June 7. USA, South Beach in Edgartown. Cachalot (sperm whale). Very decomposed whale, 40 feet long. Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe laboratory stated it died 2 weeks ago. See Newfoundland airburst post on May 16.

UAE reveals study of 7 dead whales

The Environment and Protected Areas Authority in Sharjah (EPAA) has completed a study to analyse tissues of 7 dead whales beached in the UAE. A team of researchers conducted necropsies on 5 Bryde’s Whales, 1 Blue Whale, and 1 Humpback Whale.

North Atlantic Whale Deaths: Airbursts since 2016, a mirror image to the North Pacific

Since 2016 there have been 31 airbursts detected by NASA in the North Atlantic. It is a mirror image of the North Pacific that has seen a rise in Humpback whale deaths and an upward trajectory of airbursts and meteor activity in general.

It's important to add this event to show how many meteor incidents occur that are not widely catalogued in data systems that basically happen every day. These air blasts are hazardous to whales.

2018, March 7. USA, Washington State, Pacific Ocean. LARGE METEOR. Loud sonic booms. Three National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather stations detected the fall of a meteorite about 25 kilometres off the coast of Washington state. The fall was widely seen and heard around local areas. The estimated size of meteor was 4.4 kg. Meteorites recovered by expedition.

Gray Whale die off in the Pacific: 2019 to 2023

In 2019, 122 Gray whales died on North American coastlines. Illegal hunting, ship strikes, and pollution have been major contributors however there was one event that was overlooked. An airburst. Gray whales cannot take a hit like this, and neither can humpbacks or dolphins. With the ever-increasing bolide activity, the deaths will only increase. In the Southern Ocean, the populations will weather the storm due to isolation factors. In the northern hemisphere, they won't be as lucky because of the outside influences adding to the deaths.

2018, December 18. Airburst. Location: Bearing Sea. (56.9, 172.4). Time: 23:48. e = 3133, -e = 49 or equivalent to 49,000,000 kg of TNT. Altitude = 26 km. Velocity = 13.6 km/s.

After this event, the Gray whale population has declined. The sad truth of the matter is that most will sink at sea never to be seen again.

2018 Whale Stranding Event at Hamelin Bay in Western Australia caused by Meteor Airburst.

51 days after an airburst off the Western Australian coast 150 short-finned black dolphins were stranded.

Black dolphins or Short-finned pilot whales can travel exceedingly fast, up to 160 km a day. This is extremely rare for them to do. These animals are cheetahs of the sea, and a day at most would see this maintained. If a pod was within 100 - 150 km (conservative estimate) of this airburst the VLT radio waves or concussion results would have an effect. Usually, they travel from 40 to 100 km in a relaxed day. For argument's sake, I will take the bare minimum travel distance. A pod with juveniles travelling at 40 km a day, to travel 1943 km, would take 49 days to reach land at Hamelin Bay if they were slowed down by distress. This is 2 days before the 51-day airburst/stranding time reference.

Note: My research has estimated that electrophonic meteors, VLF radio waves, can admit through the environment well over 200 km away from an airburst incident.

You would have more fish if they stopped killing Dolphins.

The days of stupidity are coming to an end. This is why Japan, Russia, Norway, Iceland, Farro Islands, Denmark and Canada are digging their own watery graves when it comes to overfishing. Nature is going to destroy your industries. You have no idea how a dolphin behaves. It's a scavenger that wanders the oceans eating bits of everything. They actually create more fish than they consume. WHY? Well, they eat stingrays and other predators that consume FISH!!! You are totally blind to the environment that you pretend to know. Dolphins are wolves of the sea, they create a healthy environment, that's why they have survived because they are measured on what they take. The Japanese don't do this, they are not measured and are ignorant. The only people that are destroying fish populations are the people doing the killing.

In Australia we have dolphins, and the fish population is not affected, it's overfishing - overfished to feed an already unhealthy population. Farm something for a change!!! Stop being a bunch of pillages and rapists of the sea. They overfish their stocks and then come to the Southern Ocean to consume more. Take-take-take.

The Chinese have a lesson right under their stupid noses. The Panda. A bear that went from being a carnivore to eating nutrient-poor bamboo to survive. People live in the same environment as all other species and in the future, we are going to see what happens...again, when we eat and destroy at will.

We have a problem. It's not beautiful shooting stars or on the other end Armageddon comets. It's in the middle where bolides, airbursts and meteoroid showers are. In some areas, we are starting to see fish die off, and in other areas, we are seeing the reverse with fish populations exploding caused by iron from meteors seeding the atmosphere. Iron feeds plankton and plankton feeds fish. It's boom and bust. This is going to continue for decades. If the dolphins and whales crash during this period, then the whole system will crash. The sea floor will be sterile of food and the whole chain from there up will fail. We need millions of whales and dolphins in the ocean living and dying naturally to feed the ecosystem.

Russia should be kicked out of Antarctica never to be allowed back in. Plain and simple. The only science the Russians are doing in Antarctica concerns exploiting the environment. Japan should be expelled from the Southern Ocean altogether until it stops hunting whales. If they had their way, they would kill everything. Norway and its factory ships are factories destroying a whole ecosystem. Do you want fish? Farm it!!! Stay where you are and do with what you have, seeing you have managed the ocean around you so well. Let the fish stocks recover then fish it sustainably. You never learn. Again and again, through history, you have buried yourselves in mismanagement.

The Australian government should stop listening to these foreign advisors and diplomats that come to Australia, (brought in by Australia's fishing industry), and try to coerce us into fishing even further. They are feeding you rubbish and only want access to fishing grounds and to make a small minority of Australian families super rich.

The people screaming about climate change don't know who the real enemies are, or should I say they are too cowardly to fight the real enemies of the ocean. Don't fight Russia, it's too hard and dangerous. Wow, when did environmentalists start diving for cover from a real fight? Environmental groups are spending hundreds of millions of dollars on protecting the environment when they could be using this money to take the fight to the real causes of climate destruction.

Many species have not even come close to recovering from the whaling days, and now they are under threat again. Seal numbers are sad in the Southern Ocean. They couldn't be lower if you tried.

Lastly, Tasmania's bays, inlets and beaches should be filled with whales, dolphins, seals and other creatures, but they are not. Why? Because the Australian fishing industry is still trying to feed countries that are paralyzing the ocean environment. We are feeding human pigs.

Interesting Fact: Orcas are more likely to be attacked by a pod of Black Dolphins (Pilot Whales) than the other way around. It's been found that Orcas are incredibly weary of Black Dolphins because they have a mob mentality and use it to their advantage.
