Meteor Airburst off the coast of Brazil

2025, September 9. South Atlantic, 77km off the coast of Brazil in Ceará. Airburst. Time:17:49:10UT, 14:433 time zones. Coordinates: (2.3S, 39.5W). Altitude: 24.0km. Velocity: 20.72km/sec. Energy: e = 15.3e10, -e = 0.44 or 440,000 kg/TNT. Travelling east. Seen inland as far as 140 km and 216km from event. It displayed properties of concurrent and delayed sound. Given the location on the continental shelf and the substantial energy release, a Marine Animal Disturbance Alert should be issued for the region. This is the 25th airburst of 2025.  



Note of Interest: 2025, September 8. Saudi Arabia, Hail Province, 13km west of An Nimriyah. Airburst. Time: 10:09:15. Coordinates: (26.4N, 42.2E). Altitude: 28.4km. Energy: e = 3.6e10, -e = 0.12 or 120,000 kg/TNT. This is the 24th airburst of 2025.

Australia and New Zealand cetacean and meteor activity in May

2025, May 12. New Zealand, inland North Island between Rotorua and Taupo. Seen at Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Waikato and Wellington in locations 440km apart. Fireball. Time: around 07:57 UT. Travelling west to east.

2025, May 18. New Zealand, North Island, Waiheke, Onetangi Beach. Dead Pygmy Cachalot.

2025, May 19. Tasmania, Hobart. Fireball. Time: Around 20:32. Looking towards the west/south west. Duration: 6 sec.

2025, May 19. South Australia, Largs Bay. A dolphin calf washed ashore dead.

2025, May 21. New Zealand, North Island. Small Fireball. Time: 22:38. Travelling west to east over water between the mainland and Rangitoto Island north of Auckland.

2025, May 21. New Zealand, South Island, Westport, Carters Beach. Dead Pygmy Sperm whale.

2025, May 30. New Zealand, North Island, north of Auckland. Fireball. Seen in Waikato Region. Travelling SSW. Time: 21:42NZST and around 09:27 UT.

Meteor off Albany watch - updated 20240617

Hopefully, the whales are taking a detour. I'm not overly worried about this just a curious stone. It will give me some scale on electrophonic events if anything does happen. A mass stranding is unlikely (looking at this) however a stranding of something wouldn't surprise me because the field of view is limited and for every object 50 more go undetected??? The time of year is not great. The event is neither good, bad or ugly??? The two objects at the bottom mean the atmosphere is thick further out. I will see what is detected in the next few days, hopefully, the velocity was slow enough to cause any upset.

2024, June 14. Meteor. Coordinates: LB:119.20, LB: -35.07, LE: 120.13, LE: -35.03. Velocity: 23.07 km/s. Duration 3.99 seconds. Height 102.1 to 75.86 km.

This reminds me of New Zealand a month or so ago. You need a major event or a cluster to corner animals. Like New Zealand, it's difficult to read with the data seen. Observations from the public are beneficial, and the lack of supported meteor sightings suggests that it would need a large camera-detected event to warrant a watch for a mass stranding. As in New Zealand, animals will move away from areas that are annoying to their senses, if it's a slow progression of activity. Also, the atmosphere has been free of airbursts in the Southern Ocean so injured animals swimming north are reduced. As stated before NASA doesn't pick up all activity although looking at global data latitude airbursts have been concentrated towards the equatorial regions.
