Meteor airburst in Fiji archipelago

2026, August 1. Pacific Ocean, 200km SW of Fiji. Low-energy meteor Airburst. Time: 17:43UT. Altitude: 45km. Energy: e = 2.9e10, -e = 0.1 or 100,000 kg/TNT. Velocity components NA at moment.

2026, August 4. UK, Suffolk. Fireball. Duration: 10-second bolide.

Greek tragedy, its all Italy's fault

1996, May 12 and 13. Greece, Peloponnese Peninsula, The Kyparissiakos Gulf is effectively an acoustic "collector." Because it is a curved, open bay facing the deep waters of the Ionian Sea. The Kyparissiakos Gulf is a "catcher's mitt" for the Ionian Sea. Any airburst over the Ionian Trench (between Italy and Greece) would have sent a shockwave directly into the deep-sea canyons where these beaked whales reside.A mass stranding of 12 Cuviers beaked whales. Spread out. Possible concussion type event. (Blamed on Military sonar testing). Unlike "typical" mass strandings where a pod beaches at the same time in one spot, these whales were spread across 38 kilometers of coastline. Northern Limit: The strandings began just south of the town of Katakolo. Southern Limit: The line of strandings extended down toward Kyparissia. Acoustic Funneling: Any pressure wave from an airburst over the Ionian Sea would be funneled directly toward this sandy coastline. Magnetic Minima: Some researchers have noted that this specific stretch of the Greek coast aligns with certain magnetic minima, which you have previously noted as a point of interest in how cetaceans navigate or react to environmental stress. On average, the whales were spaced about 3.5 km apart, which is why it was classified as an "atypical" mass stranding—they didn't beach all at once in one spot. Extended Range: Two weeks after the main event, a decomposing whale was found on the nearby Zakynthos Island, about 57 km away from the closest mainland stranding site. They appeared at different times over a 36-hour window, which is why researchers labeled it an "atypical mass stranding." Physical Condition: The whales were in good health and had recently eaten (stomach contents showed fresh squid), ruling out disease or starvation. Later re-examination of photos even showed some individuals with bleeding from the eyes. The whales in the 1996 event were found across 38 kilometers. Scientists have often struggled to explain how a single sonar source (the Alliance vessel) could cause such a widely distributed "atypical" stranding unless the whales were already fleeing or disoriented over a large area.

1996. Italy. Atmospheric Booms. In May 1996, local reports from the Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna regions (facing the Ionian and Adriatic seas) mentioned unusual acoustic "booms." While these are sometimes dismissed as seismic. In the Italian Apennines and coastal regions, there is a long history of "brontidi" (thunder-like sounds without storms). These “booms” are most likely caused by meteors. The evidence is marked in airbursts that are frequently detected in the region. The history: The year before in 1995, January 4. Italy. Airburst. Coordinates: (46.4N, 12.1E). Energy: 0.14kt. Two years before that in 1993, January 19. Italy, Emilia Romagna, Lugo. Airburst. Coordinates: (44.5°N 11.9°E). -e = 10 kilotonnes of TNT (42 TJ). Altitude: 30 km. The bolide was caused by the breakup of a low density meteoroid traveling at approximately 26 km/s. Peak magnitude -23 crossed the sky of Northern Italy, ending with an explosion. The explosion (14 kt of energy) generated shock waves which were recorded by six local seismic stations. In Southern Italy and the Ionian region, local reports from May 1996 include references to "brontidi" (mysterious thunder-like booms in clear skies). These acoustic events were reported in the days leading up to the May 12 stranding, suggesting that atmospheric entries were "priming" the acoustic environment of the Ionian Sea before the NATO sonar even began. The bigger picture: May 1 Comet Hyakutake Perihelion Peak debris field interaction (11 days before). This tail was 3.8 AU long—the longest ever recorded—meaning the entire Mediterranean region was passing through a dense field of cometary debris for the first two weeks of May. May 5–6 Eta Aquariid Peak High-energy meteor flux over the Mediterranean (6 days before). May 8 Major Bolide Recorded Global acoustic pressure pulse (4 days before). May 11 NATO Sonar Trials Begin. The "official" cause, though whales may have already been in distress.

Beaked whale stranding in Spain

Below is the time frame. I'm waiting necropsy results in the coming weeks to add to the 2026 post. In the interim, I looked back at past events.

2026, January 15. Spain, southern coast of Alicante, over La Mata. Fireball. residents along the witnessed a breathtaking celestial display. Time: exactly 6:47:48 a.m, 05:47:48 UTC. A spectacular bolide, an exceptionally bright meteor, streaked across the pre-dawn sky. The event was vividly captured by a webcam operated by the Proyecto Mastral. At peak magnitude it rivaled the quarter moon, making it visible even as the dawn light began to break. The meteor entered the atmosphere over the Mediterranean Sea and moved in a northwesterly direction, passing directly over the La Mata lagoon and the southern coast of Alicante.

2026, January 23. Spain, along the Murcia and Almería coasts. A mass stranding of four Cuvier’s beaked whales. They were all found stranded and dead on the same day. The strandings occurred at Mazarrón, Águilas, and Almería, all within a short time window. "Atypical" Classification: Because the animals appeared nearly simultaneously across a specific area without an obvious biological cause, it has been categorized as an atypical event.

2006 and 2025 Incidents.

The path of the 2026 bolide almost perfectly mirrors a similar event from January 24, 2025, where an asteroid fragment overflew Murcia and Alicante before ending at 40 km. This suggests a recurring "orbital corridor" for debris in the early part of the year, which consistently places high-energy airbursts over these sensitive marine habitats.  The day after in El Toyo beach (Almería), an adult female Cuvier’s beaked whale stranded and died.

2006, January 7. Spain/Morocco. A bright fireball was recorded over the Mediterranean Sea, between the coasts of Andalusia (Spain) and Morocco. It was generated by a cometary meteoroid traveling at 66,000 km/h and was visible from several observatories, including Calar Alto in Almería. On January 26-27. Spain. A mass stranding of four Cuvier's beaked whales (two live, two dead).

The Naval Activity Argument (AIS Data) 2026.

Local environmental groups (ANSE and Ecologists in Action) have pointed to military vessel movements in the waters off Mazarrón (near the stranding sites) in the hours leading up to the event. NATO Exercise "Steadfast Dart": This major exercise officially launched on January 15, 2026—the exact same day as the Alicante meteor. It involved 11 nations, including Spain, and integrates maritime and special operations forces. Russian Naval Transit: In late January 2026, the Spanish Navy was on high alert due to the Russian destroyer Severomorsk and other vessels transiting the Strait of Gibraltar toward the eastern Mediterranean. The Spanish patrol vessel Audaz was actively tracking these movements. Acoustic Link: Scientists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria are investigating "acute decompression syndrome" (gas embolism), which is a classic signature of sonar-induced trauma in beaked whales.

Cachalot dead in Spain

2025, December 27. Spain, Costa Brava, Platja d'Aro beach. A Cachalot (sperm whale) calf washed ashore dead after a days-long levanter storm. The tether line dragged the cetacean to shore. 

2025, December 27. Malaysia, Borneo, beach in Karambunai. Dolphin stranded prompted investigations by the relevant authorities, with officials confirming that a report has been received.

Ionian Sea and California meteor events/strandings

I'm not too concerned about these events or linking them, just watching. 

2025, October 31. USA, California, Fireball. Travelling SW. Time: around 22:59PDT.  

2025, November 6. Mediterranean Sea, Ionian Sea. Fireball. Travelling SSW. Time: around 18:06 UT, or 19:15 LT. Only one report of concurrent sound, and it was fragmented. No strandings in the area as of post date 20251110.

2025, November 7. USA, California, Malibu. A species of Beaked whale stranded alive and was euthanized after failed attempts to refloat. 

2025, November 9. USA, California, at Tajiguas west of Goleta. A deceased whale in a skeleton state of decomposition. It's very deteriorated down to bone and blubber. There was also a deceased whale in this spot in December 2021. This could be an old stranding. 

Update 20251111. 2025, November 10. USA, California, Santa Monica. A dead whale washed ashore. Crews moved the roughly 20-foot carcass inland.

2025, November 7. Canada, British Columbia, near Lasqueti Island. A humpback whale has been found dead in the Salish Sea, the second confirmed humpback death in coastal B.C. waters in just over two weeks. The whale was identified through photographs as Polyphemus (BCZ0342), a 21-year old humpback known to migrate to Hawaii.

The Lebanon/Palestine mass cetacean stranding incident in 2023

2023, August 21. Cyprus, Mediterranean Sea. Fireball. Travelling east. Delivered concurrent and delayed sound. Time: Around 18:23 UT or 21:23LT. Seen in Antalya, Jerusalem District, Larnaca, Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos. This was the only event recorded in the region that created a sonic boom in 2023 and three years before this. The last one recorded was out of the cetacean migratory season. 

2023, August 28 to September 3. Israel and Lebanon. A cluster stranding of 3 cachalots (sperm whales). The first of the three was found August 28, on a Palestinian beach. The carcass of a male sperm whale was ~ 12 meters long. The second washed up the next day, August 29, north of the city of Tyre in Lebanon was ~ 14 meters long. The third was found on Sunday, which given the date sequence would be September 3, (assuming that timeline) south of Tyre. It was a male sperm whale. The size less clearly given in that report. Researchers noted the unusually close timing and location: three whales in a short stretch of coastline (~130 km) between Israel and Lebanon. At least two of them were male. Because sperm whales often travel in groups of young males (“bachelor groups”), this raised concern that some traumatic regional event (e.g. seismic activity or underwater blast) might have affected the group.  

Update post on Brazilian Meteor Airburst and comet SWAN25B

Update: 2025, September 9. South Atlantic, 77km off the coast of Brazil in Ceará. Some witnesses reported faint hissing sounds, while others described loud booms comparable to thunder, in one case strong enough to cause ground vibrations.  The event was caught on satellite by NASA.

2025, September 13. Mediterranean Sea, between Libya and Sicily, Malta region. Misrata; Misrata District. Fireball. Time: 22:45 UT or 00:45 EET. Duration: 3.5s. Seen in Calabria, Misrata District and Sicilia.

2025, September 10. Mid Pacific Ocean, French Polynesia. Airburst. Time: 11:00:57. Coordinates: (14.8S,142.4W). Altitude: 37.0km. Energy: 2.8e10, -e = 0.098 or 98,000 kg/TNT. Velocity: NA. This is the 26th airburst of 2025.

2025, September 13. (Land-based Event) Argentina, Lihuel Calel Department, La Pampa Province. Airburst. Time: 22:26:39UT. 19:24LT. Coordinates: (38.1S,64.8W). Altitude: 25.1 km. Energy: e = 16.7e10, -e = 0.48 or 480,000 kg/TNT. Velocity: 17.8 km/s. Seen east at Bahía Blanca, Provincia de Buenos Aires (AR), “ It was persistent and incandescent, like it got on fire quickly. The train lasted for a while. It was kind of a whiteish explosion and I saw some fragmentation.” Seen 520km south at Puerto Madryn, Chubut Province (AR) “It exploded very close to the ground, at an extremely fast speed, and the explosion was very very large. It left a huge trail of fire and then the smoke remained as a red cloud for more than 10 minutes.” This is the 27th airburst of 2025.

2025, September 10. USA, North Atlantic. Fireball. Seen in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont on Thursday, Travelling SSW on the coast near Casco Bay, Maine. Time: 20:47EDT.

2025, September 13. USA, Well Fleet, Chipman’s Cove. A mass stranding of 7 dolphins. Out of the 12 in the pod, comprising six males and six females, spanning juvenile, subadult, and adult stages, seven ended up stranded, while others stayed afloat in shallow waters. The rescued animals underwent veterinary care, such as intravenous hydration and comfort measures, enroute to their release point near Herring Cove Beach in Provincetown. The next day, five dolphins were spotted again in the Herring River Gut area of Wellfleet. One had passed away before help arrived, but the four surviving ones were transported and freed into deeper waters off Herring Cove Beach.

Observation Topic: The comet SWAN25B was detected approximately 72 hours ago following its perihelion passage, when it became visible in the night sky. Prior to this, it remained undetected because its trajectory brought it into the inner solar system from the Sun-facing, or daylight, side of the sky. Since solar illumination limits terrestrial observations to the night hemisphere at any given time, the comet’s approach was concealed within the Sun’s glare until its recent emergence. It remains uncertain whether this phenomenon is responsible for the recent increase in meteor airbursts; however, ongoing observations over the coming weeks may provide further insight. Additional atmospheric anomalies, including unexplained explosive events, have been reported within the past week, though these so-called 'ghost events' appear to have been excluded from NASA’s official analyses. Either side of October 5th is likely to be eventful. Comet SWAN25B also shows how unprepared we are for these out-of-the-blue objects when they arrive from Earth's blind spots. 

Mass stranding in Libya

2025, September 4. Libya, Gulf of Sidra, Marir Qabis, the coastal region 35–40 km west of Ajdabiya, the eastern part of the country, Mediterranean Sea. Four large cachalots (sperm whales) washed ashore and died. They are stretched out over a 2 km of sandy coastline.

Update 20250906: A witness stated: “It's common to see whales washed ashore this time of year, but not in this number or species.” The Ministry of Marine Wealth of the Parliament appointed a government team to collect samples from the whales to determine the causes of the unusual event.

2002 Canary Islands and the nearly 9 million kilo of TNT airburst

2002, March 1. North Atlantic. Airburst. Coordinates: (29.2, -66.8). Time: 03:53. e = 29.2, -e = 0.13 or 13,000 kg/TNT.

2002, June 2. Mediterranean Sea: 230 km N-NE of Benghazi, Libya; Airburst, which was named (2002 Eastern Mediterranean event). Coordinates: 34°N 21°E. E = 450, -e = 8.8 or 8,800,000 kg/TNT.

2002, July. USA, Cape Cod. 55 Black Dolphins were stranded, and 46 returned to sea.

2002, September 24. Canary Islands. 14 beaked whales (Blamed on mid-frequency Military sonar testing). Pushed stranding. Very similar to what happened in Madagascar in 2008. You have an airburst injury then an outside event is blamed.

Sonic boom creates earthquake in Corsica

It will be interesting to see if anything results from these two meteors. Events like this were not unexpected this week.

2024, June 20. Italy/France, Tyrrhenian Sea - Mediterranean. Sonic Boom produced an earthquake in Corsica and also heard on the island of Elba. It happened at 4:30 in the afternoon. At Elba, the town of Campo nell’Elba, a nearby tracking station, “captured a seismic, acoustic event felt by everyone”. An earthquake has been ruled out. Similar events in 2012, 2016 and 2023 have yet to be explained. Six days before on June 14 a large fireball was observed travelling N.N.E across the Ligurin Sea north of Corsica. See map below.

Cuvier's beaked whale dead on Egypt's coast

2024, June 18. Egypt, Mediterranean Sea. Cuvier's beaked whale found dead on North Coast beach. The whale was found washed up dead on a beach near Hacienda White Village in North Coast's Sidi Abdel-Rahman, according to a statement by the environment ministry.

Whales dead in Corsica and spectacular fireball in Portugal - Updated 20240520

2024, May 18. Corsica, Aleria, Serra di Fiumortu and Ghisonaccia, Mediterranean Sea. Three Cuvier's Beaked Whales strand with two dying. The individual at Ghisonaccia was 6 meters long and weighed 1.8 tons.

2024, May 14. Italy, Abruzzo, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Marche and Steiermark. Fireball. Time: 0:06 UT. 2024-05-14 22:06CEST.

2024, May 19. Time 0:46 CET (23:46 Lisbon time). A bright fireball crossed the skies of Spain and Portugal and as far away as France. Meteor (likely a fragment from a comet). It was travelling NW. delivering concurrent and delayed sound. Time: Lisbon time: 23:46 or 0:46 CET. The AMS has the following date/time: 2024-05-18 22:50 UT; 2024-05-19 00:18. Due to this event's atmospheric bruising, a marine animal disturbance alert should be considered for the next 14 to 30 days. Any animals located after 14 days will die quickly or wash ashore already deceased. Affected areas include the coastal waters of Portugal, Spain's northern and southern coastlines, France's southern coast, United Kingdom, Ireland and the Azores. Because of its location past the continental shelf, the risk to Cachalots (sperm whales) is highly likely. The meteor is said to have come in at 40.4km/s, travelled 500km in ten seconds and dismantled at an altitude of 60km over the Atlantic Ocean. 

UPDATE: Earth Skimming Fireball was asteroid in Spain, and China Airburst on March 17

2024, March 30. Spain/Mediterranean. Earth Skimming Fireball. Time: 22h59m TUC (23h59 CET). Flew over Catalonia, across the Balearic Sea and the Balearic Islands. It was caught on camera for well over 35 seconds.

2024, March 17. China, Zhongchangyuan, Zixi County, Fuzhou, Jiangxi. Airburst. Location (27.6, 117). Altitude: 42.1 km. Velocity: 25.6 km/s. e = 3.7 and -e = 0.13. Equivalent to 130,000 kg of TNT.
