2013 Europe Meteor Activity, Cetaceans and the Seismic Survey

Was it a seismic survey off NW Spain that quietened Fin Whales in 2013?

A study utilized 63 days of continuous ocean-bottom recordings (Julian Days 156–218). It analyzed four alternating periods: Shooting 1, Quiet 1 (vessel repairs), Shooting 2, and Quiet 2 (post-survey). Statistical Findings: A negative binomial mixed-effects model showed statistically significant reductions in whale calling during shooting periods. Masking Correction: To address potential data selectivity or artifacts, the authors applied a "worst-case scenario" correction for acoustic masking. Even under this conservative assumption, they found a minimum guaranteed reduction of 45.1% to 69.6% in vocal activity. Scientific Perspective The paper concludes that the decline in detections reflects genuine short-term behavioral responses—either reduced calling rates or temporary displacement—rather than just masking or data artifacts.

Temporal Overlap: JD 156 (June 5) is the peak of the Arietids meteor shower. The researchers noted an immediate increase in whale detections on JD 160 and JD 168–170 during brief pauses in seismic activity due to weather and repairs. Alternative Explanations: From a standard scientific view, the extremely high correlation between the start/stop of airgun fire and the whale vocalization changes is very strong evidence for the seismic impact. For the meteor theory to be the primary driver, one would need to show that meteor activity fluctuated in exact synchronization with the vessel's repair schedule in port. The authors do acknowledge a major limitation: the absence of baseline data prior to any airgun shooting, which would have helped define "normal" activity levels.

Analysis of the "Selective" Data. Data being selective is statistically visible in the manuscript's own results: Correlative Peaks: The study highlights "elevated detections" on JD 160 and JD 168–170. While they attribute this solely to the airguns being turned off for repairs, these dates fall directly within the most intense phase of the Arietid and Zeta Perseid daytime showers. The "Baseline" Problem: The authors admit they lack baseline data from before the survey began. Without this, they cannot distinguish if the "Quiet" periods represent a return to "normal" or if the whales were responding to something else entirely (like meteor-induced infrasound) that happened to overlap with the survey dates. Masking Assumptions: The 70.4% reduction in calls is based on the machine learning model's inability to "hear" whales during airgun blasts. By focusing only on the survey's noise, they may have overlooked how cosmic activity influences the acoustic environment or the biological triggers for these animals. Given that several large, exploding bolides were confirmed in the Spanish region during this exact survey window, the exclusion of meteor activity from their environmental variables is a significant gap in their professional scientific document.

While the manuscript reports a 70.4% reduction in whale detections during airgun activity, the methodology relies on a selective dataset that fails to account for significant cosmic and atmospheric events occurring simultaneously. Methodological Limitations: Absence of Baseline Data: The study lacks pre-survey baseline recordings. Consequently, "normal" vocalisation rates are never established, making it impossible to determine if fluctuations were solely anthropogenic or influenced by natural external stressors.

Temporal Correlation Bias: The researchers attribute "elevated detections" on JD 160 and JD 168–170 exclusively to operational pauses for vessel repairs. However, these dates coincide precisely with the peak of the Daytime Arietid meteor shower and the appearance of high-magnitude bolides in the Spanish region.

Environmental Variable Exclusion: The negative binomial mixed-effects model accounted for instrument and day-level effects but excluded all non-anthropogenic acoustic inputs, such as infrasonic signals from meteor airbursts.

Daytime Arietids (JD 156–173): One of the year's most intense meteor showers peaked during the survey’s first shooting leg.

Galicia Bolides: The Spanish Meteor Network (SPMN) confirmed multiple bright fireballs and exploding bolides in the region during the survey window. Such events generate low-frequency shockwaves and infrasound that overlap with the 20 Hz frequency range of fin whale calls.

Perseids Transition (JD 197–212): The onset of the second shooting phase aligned with the ramp-up of the Perseid shower.

The "sharp increase" in detections during quiet periods and the "rapid decline" during shooting may be partially influenced by the whales' response to meteor-induced pressure changes or acoustic signatures that were not isolated in the CNN detector's training. To provide a robust scientific document, future research must integrate cosmic and atmospheric data to ensure findings are not skewed by selective environmental modeling.

February 15, 2013 – Global Atmospheric Pulse: While the massive Chelyabinsk airburst occurred over Russia, its shockwaves were recorded globally by infrasound stations. Research suggests such large-scale events can produce atmospheric pressure changes felt across entire hemispheres.

March 2013 – Comet Pan-STARRS (C/2011 L4): This comet was visible to the naked eye throughout March 2013, appearing specifically in the western sky over France and Spain. During this time, it was transitioning through the constellation Cetus (The Whale).

September 3, 2013 – Northern Italy Fireball: A bright fireball was recorded over Northern Italy at 02:12 local time. Eyewitnesses in the Veneto region reported hearing explosive sounds (sonic booms) following the flash, indicating a significant atmospheric disruption.

September 9, 2013 – September epsilon-Perseid Outburst: A significant outburst of meteor activity was recorded over Spain. Monitoring stations registered a marked increase in bright meteors and fireballs between September 9 and September 10.

The year 2013 was characterized by a high volume of both biological and celestial anomalies in the Mediterranean basin. The Striped Dolphin UME in the Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy) reached its peak shortly after the mid-February global atmospheric events. Furthermore, the documented fireballs over Northern Italy and Spain in September provide localized data points for research into the immediate atmospheric effects on cetacean behavior in those specific coastal corridors.

2013, April 30. North Atlantic Ocean: SW of the Azores. Airburst. Coordinates: (35.5°N 30.7°W). Energy: 511e10 (42 TJ), -e = 9.8 or 9,800,000 kg/TNT. Detonation Altitude 21.2 km. Velocity impact at a low 12.1 km/s.

2013, December 23. Mediterranean, south of Spain. Airburst. Coordinates: (39.5N, 2.0E). Time: 08:30UT. Energy: -e = 29.5, 0.79kt or 790,000 kg/TNT. Altitude: 34.3 km. Velosity: 15.13 km/s.

This data is highly compelling when cross-referenced with regional stranding reports. The two events identified—the high-energy airburst SW of the Azores and the Christmas-season detonation south of Spain—align with significant biological disruptions in those specific maritime corridors.

Event 1: April 30, 2013 – SW of the Azores

Meteor Data: Airburst at 21.2 km altitude, energy equivalent to 9,800 tons of TNT.

In March and April 2013, the Azores recorded unusual activity, including a 12-meter fin whale stranding on Pico Island. The Beaked Whale Connection: Most notably, the late spring and summer of 2013 saw a spike in "unexplained" beaked whale deaths (specifically Sowerby’s and Cuvier’s beaked whales) in the Azores. These deep-diving species are highly sensitive to acoustic and pressure-related disturbances. Pressure Pulse Potential: An airburst of nearly 10 kilotons at 21 km altitude would generate a significant infrasonic pressure wave. For deep-diving cetaceans in the Mid-Atlantic, such a pulse can trigger rapid ascent or "panic dives," leading to the decompression-like symptoms often seen in atypical strandings.

Event 2: December 23, 2013 – South of Spain (39.5°N, 2.0°E). Meteor Data: Airburst at 34.3 km altitude, south of Mallorca/Ibiza, energy of 790 tons of TNT. The Location (39.5°N, 2.0°E): This coordinate places the detonation directly over the Balearic Sea, specifically just off the coast of Mallorca. This is a critical habitat and migratory corridor for striped dolphins, sperm whales, and pilot whales. Biological Impact (Winter 2013-2014): The Striped Dolphin UME: While a massive mortality event was already underway in the Mediterranean (Italy/France), there was a renewed "pulse" of strandings on the Spanish Mediterranean coast and Catalonia in late December 2013 and early January 2014. Unusual Behavior: Local reports from the Balearic Islands in early 2014 noted several juvenile cetaceans appearing in shallow waters, a behavior often preceding a stranding. Acoustic Overlap: This airburst occurred at 08:30 UT, during a period when Mediterranean waters are relatively quiet acoustically (mid-winter). A detonation of 0.79kt would be a massive acoustic "injection" into the local environment.

Airbursts, Fireballs and Cetacean Strandings in last month

2024, August 25. South Africa. Small Airburst / Meteor Impact. Time: 08:51. The detonation occurred 60 km inland from the coast. Travelling east over coast. Coordinates: (-33.6, 24.5). Altitude: 38.2 km. Velocity: 20.1 km/s. -e = 2.6e10, e = 0.092 or 92,000 kg/TNT. Three massive explosions were heard near Mossel Bay, Great Brak and St Francis Bay region. One witness stated that it sounded like a jet passing over, and caused the sliding doors in their house to rattle. The main explosion was heard and felt at places over 273 km apart at Humansdorp, Patensie and Addo, and as far afield as Sedgefield and George. Meteorites were located in Nqweba from a stony chondritic meteroid estimated to be around 7 feet long. Meteorites recovered at Kirkwood, 100 km from St Francis Bay. The furthest report the scientists received of someone observing the incident was from Ceres, over 600km away from where fragments were spotted. The fireball that streaked across the heavens was heard from Gqeberha to the Karoo 315 km apart. There were reports of small fragments hitting the water offshore. See September 14 humpback death.

2024, August 27. UK, Cumbria, Braystones, near Whitehaven, Irish Sea. A dead juvenile minke or fin whale. Measuring approximately 3.5m (11.5ft) in length.

2024, August 27. USA, Florida, St. Augustine Beach. Dead dolphin. South of the A Street beach access. Its carcass was found heavily shark-scavenged.

2024, August 28. USA, North Carolina, Corolla. A very emaciated pygmy sperm whale that washed up on an Outer Banks beach had to be euthanized.

2024, August 30. Bangladesh, Sonarpara beach of Cox's Bazar sea coast. A dead spinner dolphin. The length of spinner dolphin is 8 feet and weight is 95 kg. It is assumed that the dolphin might have died within 24 hours.

2024, August 30. Alaska, Prince of Wales Island. Subadult female Humpback was found in waters near Craig.

2024, August 30. Italy, north east, Porto San Rocco in Muggia, located in Trieste. Crews removed the carcass of a Fin whale measuring 13 meters (42 feet), which was discovered underneath a pier. Appeared to have been dead for no more than 7 days. See 2024, August 12.

2024, September 2. Scotland, Lunan Bay, Angus beach. A large male minke whale washed up deceased and decomposed. The whale may have become entangled.

2024, September 2. Thailand, Phuket’s Bang Tao Beach. A pregnant 2.24-metre-long female Dwarf Sperm whale with a 50-centimetre-long male calf, tragically choked by a stomach full of rubbish, was found dead.

2024, September 2. Alaska, Prince of Wales Island. Humpback, young male whale was found in waters near Craig.

2024, September 3. Philippines, Mariveles, Bataan. A dead dolphin was found floating near a beach resort in front of the Freeport Area of Bataan. The cetacean measured four to five feet in length. There are verifying reports of another dead dolphin sighting off Barangay Cabcaben in Mariveles.

2024, September 3. Egypt, near Cairo. Large Bolide. Caught on camera from the International Space Station. Time: at 5:42 am (IST)

2024, September 5. Philippines, North Luzon, N.E in the Philippine Sea. Airburst. Coordinates: (18, 123). It was 86 km east from the coast. Energy: -e = 6.2, e = 0.2 or 200,000 kg/TNT. Altitude: 25km. Velocity: 19.7 km/s. Time: 00:39PST. UT around 16:39 on the 4th. Asteroid 2024 RW1 was discovered 8 hours before entering the Earth's atmosphere. Asteroid Designation: CAQTDL2. Diameter: 1.5 m or 4.9 ft. Mass: 6 metric tons. It created a fireball seen over Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon and Cordillera Administrative Region. Delayed and concurrent sound heard.

2024, September. Ukraine. A baby white-sided dolphin has been washed up on the coast of the Tuzly Estuaries National Nature Park in Odesa Oblast. A dead bottlenose dolphin was also found near the national park in the village of Hrybivka. Dolphins had also washed up on the Black Sea coast in Bulgaria and on the Sea of Azov coast earlier. About 50,000 dolphins perished in the Black Sea over the first eight months of the full-scale war.

2024, September 6. Timor Sea/Indian Ocean. S.W of the Indonesian Island of Sumba. Airburst. Time:12:36. Coordinates: (-12.9, 118). e = 2.1, -e = 0.076 or 76,000 kg/TNT. Altitude: 27km. Velocity: 22.6 km/s.

2024, September 6. Indonesia, Liliweri, Alor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. A total of 17 pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) were found dead stranded on the coast. The condition of these whales was poor with wounds from being hit by rocks on the coast, each about 10 to 15 meters apart. East Nusa Tenggara Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service, police, village government and local communities are organizing the burial. (See also February 5 and May 24 Airbursts).

2024, September 10. USA, California, Carmel River State Beach. A stranded killer whale rescued died while in transport to Santa Cruz’s Long Marine Laboratory.

2024, September 10. USA, California, Ventura County, Port Hueneme. A dead minke whale washed up along the coast. Was found near a jetty close to the lighthouse.

2024, September 11. North Sea. Fireball. Drenthe, Friesland, Gelderland, Groningen and Schleswig-Holstein. Time:around 19:10. UT. 21:10CEST. Travelling N.N.W.

2024, September 14. South Africa, St Helena Bay, located at Sandy Point Beach Estate on the West Coast, Cape Town. Dead Humpback floating offshore. 20 days after August 25th airburst.

2024, September 14. USA, Long Island, Cupsogue Beach in Westhampton Beach. A dead whale landed at on Saturday morning. The whale carcass, a 62-foot finback whale, is not intact due to “significant predation and decomposition”.

2024, September 14. India, Visakhapatnam. A dead Spinner dolphin (Stenella Longirostris) washed ashore at RK Beach. ‘dead strandings’. Responding unit East Coast Conservation Team (ECCT), Andhra Pradesh Forest Department.

2024, September 17. Malayia, Kuala Sungai Padang area. The carcass of a Irrawaddy dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris), weighing about 130kg. The dolphin has been dead for three days. The carcass did not find any injury on the body and the cause of its death is still under investigation.

2024, September 16. USA, Cape Cod, Linnell Landing. 14 bottlenose dolphins stranded with three confirmed dead. In just the last two weeks, rescue agencies have responded to 26 dolphin strandings, both common and bottlenose, so we have been on high alert and monitoring their movements closely.

2024, September 22. USA, Oregon, Hug Point State Park in Clatsop County. A giant sunfish, (mola mola). Washed up on an beach for the third time this summer. Three sunfish have washed up on beaches in the county since June. A mola tecta, or hoodwinker sunfish, washed up in June, followed by another mola mola in August.

2024, September 22. Thailand, Kata Noi Beach in Phuket. A rare Risso’s dolphin carcass, tragically entangled in a pile of rubbish. The Rare and Endangered Marine Animals Group, part of the Upper Andaman Marine and Coastal Resources Research Center (MCRC) is investigating.

2024, September 22. UK, Hartlepool. The whale was spotted at the Headland. Experts believe it to be a Minke.

2024, September 22. USA, Texas, near Kahala Beach on Galveston Island. A dead pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) was found stranded.

2024, September 25. UK, Headland Beach, Hartlepool. Believed to be a minke or fin whale and is unable to be moved.

2024, September 26. Indonesia, Teritip Beach, about 35 kilometers north of Balikpapan, East Kalimantan. Cachalot. The mammal had reportedly been stranded for 4 days before dying.

Glacier retraction and meteor streams

An interesting discovery in my research has been the sporadic retraction of glaciers globally. I will write further about this in the future; however, this is one of the main findings. Europe versus Greenland. In Europe the glaciers are under a condition of rapid retreat whereas in Greenland they are growing or stable. Why? The answer seems to be in meteoroid streams and the scattering of iron and other elements into the atmosphere. Europe since 1850 has been a very active region for meteor activity whereas in Greenland it seems to be rather non-existent and still is. This stream or activity is steadily moving westward. The darker snow gets the more heat it will absorb and this seems to be the case in Europe. There is also a correlation in other parts of the world. Once again meteors are the quiet killer that are not just affecting whales, they are affecting other environmental foundations we rely on.

Meteoroid bounced off the European atmosphere

2024, July 7. Europe, seen in multiple countries. Earth skimming meteoroid dismantled into two objects. Travelling N.W. Time: 00:27UT and 2 seconds later. First object: Velocity: 64.89 km/s, Duration: 9.48 seconds. Coordinates: Beg (47.87, 10.34), (50.82.3.42). Altitude: 109.47 to 109.26 km. Second: Velocity 63.27 km/s. Duration: 4.52 seconds. Coordinates: (49.80, 6.02), (51.11, 2.64). Altitude: 102.70 to 112.66 km. This last one bounced off the atmosphere. The first one travelled through.

Two large meteor updates and continued New Zealand activity. (Updated 20240507) Spain and New Zealand meteors

2024, May 3. USA, Ohio. Seen in many surrounding states including Canada. Large Fireball. Sonic booms and electrophonic properties. Local Time: 23:16 or Saturday, May 4th 2024 around 03:36 UT. A loud whistle, and then two quick booms were heard. Then a loud thud then an impact boom in the distance. There was a faint vibration felt in the ground.

2024, May 4. Spain. Large Fireball. Officially termed SPMN050524D, was seen streaking through the skies of Aragon, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the Basque Country, La Rioja, and Navarra. Estimated to be a 1 meter in diameter chondritic.
