Why Strandings Occur Days, Weeks, or Months Later after meteor events

A common misconception is that an environmental acoustic event must cause an immediate, on-the-spot stranding. Physical pathologies often tell a different temporal story:

  • Progressive Labyrinthitis & Infection (Weeks to Months): Mechanical damage to the delicate inner ear structures often leads to localized inflammation, fluid accumulation, or secondary bacterial infection. As the internal damage slowly degrades the labyrinth over weeks, the whale's ability to maintain offshore orientation progressively collapses.

  • Gradual Pelagic Drift & Isolation (Days to Weeks): A cetacean with compromised biosonar and spatial disorientation may not strand immediately in deep water. Instead, it begins to drift off its normal migration corridor, struggles to forage effectively, becomes debilitated, and slowly navigates into shallow, treacherous coastal shelf traps days or weeks after the initial acoustic event.

  • Geomagnetic Baseline Recovery: If the high-altitude ionospheric perturbation and VLF shock scramble the local magnetic field cues, a pod already relying on a damaged vestibular system has no secondary orientation backup to correct its course as it navigates near shore.

Large Fireball shakes houses in Indonesia

2026, September 12. Indonesia, Sulawesi. Fireball. Time: 00:14LT. Duration: 4+ seconds. Sonic Boom reported at locations over 350km apart. Heard as an explosion in Gorontalo, Maelang, Manado, Palele, Batudaa Pantai. Tremor felt with houses shaken. It fell towards the sea North of Bolaang Mongondow (Boltara). Trajectory and including updates to follow. A recorded audio track from Tomohon, North Sulawesi, captures a distinct whooshing sound lasting about ten seconds. This plays almost identical to one in a previous post but is longer. Witness: “Moments after the optical flash, a heavy rumbling and sharp explosion sound (dentuman keras) shook windows and structures.”

Due to the electophonic properties of this entry, a Marine Animal Disturbance Alert should be noted for the region. Given the 350+ km shockwave radius coupled with the 10-second electrophonic audio signature, the peak fragmentation likely occurred at an altitude between 25 and 45 km, dissipating the bulk of its kinetic energy over the marine boundary of the Celebes Sea.

Observation: Eyewitnesses across Gorontalo and surrounding North Sulawesi areas observed a fast-moving, intensely bright luminous body (benda bercahaya) streaking across the sky. Acoustic Signature: A strong sonic boom/explosion sound was heard shortly after the passage, causing widespread speculation among locals that an atmospheric airburst or impact occurred, likely over the mountains of North Gorontalo / Bobungayon area.

Official Status: Indonesia’s Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) acknowledged the light flash and shockwave reports and is actively gathering observational and seismic data to verify whether the acoustic event was a high-altitude meteor airburst/fireball. No official ground-recovery or impact site has been confirmed yet by authorities.

Meteor Airburst over Canada

2026, September 11. Canada, Manitoba, 100km north of Lake Winnipeg. Airburst. Time: 01:12:11UT. Coordinates: (54.4N, 100.1W). Altitude: 38.0km. Velocity Components: NA. Energy: e = 24.6e10; -e = 0.67 or 670,000 kg/TNT. This is the twenty-first airburst recorded by NASA this year. Ratio 2025:2026 = 28:21.

Meteor Airburst over South Atlantic Ocean

2026, September 10. South Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1600km ENE of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, or 190 km NNE of Trindade Island. Airburst. Time: 05:22:22. Coordinates: (19.3S, 28.1W). Altitude: 33.6km. Velocity Components: vx = -14.6; vy = 6.4; vz = 10.9. Roughly 19.31 km/s. This is 36 degrees from the horizontal, and 55.64 degrees from the vertical. Energy: e = 11.1e10; -e = 0.33 or 330,000 kg/TNT. This is the twenteeth airburst recorded by NASA this year. Ratio 2025:2026 = 28:20.

Network detects 15 fireballs in a day

Note: For the next two weeks, AMS is down due to a cyberattack.

2026, September 9. USA, across Southern Maryland. Fireball. Time: around 2:38 a.m. Reports coming in from Prince Frederick, Accokeek and communities well beyond the region. Seen in Northern Virginia, Washington D.C, Bristow, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York. Colour: bright green or green-and-white. Sonic boom: Described as an explosion, gunshot or boom. Residents reported hearing the shockwave at around 2:40 a.m., shortly after the flash was seen. Spaceweather.com reported that NASA’s network detected 15 fireballs nationwide on September. 8.

2026, September 8. Queensland SW, Quilpie, Cooper Corner. Fireball. Lit up the entire sky and the ground like daylight. Sonic Boom: Light rumble heard after half a minute. Time: 20:02:47. Seen in locations over 1000km apart. Emerald 534 km NE of Quilpie and at Winton 480km north of Quilpie. Colour: green/ orange. Seen at Charleville Cosmos Centre, Longreach and Birdsville.

Blue whales strange behavior and cachalot stranding

I've been watching the tropical north, as written in previous posts, due to meteor activity and other natural phenomena taking place, and came across a standing and a near-stranding event. 

2026, September 8. Indonesia, North Maluku, Ternate, Kelurahan Afe Taduma Beach. A cachalot, sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), stranded. The sperm whale, approximately 9.8 meters long, apparently died before beaching. It was spotted by fishermen two days prior. 

2026, August 2. Indonesia, West Papua, southern Cenderawasih Bay, Kwatisore. A circular hole/depression in the reef measuring approximately 100 meters in diameter and 12 meters deep in the middle, accessible via a narrow, shallow channel. First recorded sighting of a blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) inside Cenderawasih Bay. The initial observation took place on August 2nd. Two whales approached within 200 meters of the shore. The larger whale entered the narrow reef channel and into the circular hole, while the smaller whale turned around and left the area. The entrapment phase lasted from the 2 August to approximately the 21 August. The blue whale (~20 meters in length) remained localised within the shallow 100 m reef hole for nearly three weeks. The animal swam in tight, continuous circles due to spatial constraints but exhibited calm behaviour. Attempted herding/rescue operations using surface dinghies to guide the whale back through the shallow exit channel were unsuccessful, as the whale refused to approach the channel. Sometime around the 21st of August, the whale successfully navigated out of the reef hole and channel on its own and departed the area. Local reports indicate three previous similar entrapment events at this exact reef location occurring more than 15 years prior, showing a recurring pattern. Three black dolphins died here before in a mass stranding years prior.

Meteoroid Impact Update

Update concerning the previous post: Impact location (6 Sep 2026 16:32:16.40 UTC). Wharton Basin / Mid-Indian Basin region. 13°51'17.7"S 116°22'49.5"E. The meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean northwest of Australia at 16:07 UTC on September 6, 2026, about 7 hours and 22 minutes after its initial observation. The European Space Agency (ESA) estimated the object at 0.6–1.3 m (2.0–4.3 feet). Because of its small size, it posed no threat and burned up as a bright fireball in the upper atmosphere without causing damage or producing recoverable meteorites. It is also notable as potentially the first Aten-class near-Earth asteroid caught before impact, as previously predicted impactors belonged to the Apollo class. Initial entry dynamics derived from pre-impact astrometric tracking and impactor modelling indicate a velocity of approximately 14.3 km/s relative to Earth.


Also: Earth Passing Through Ancient Meteoroid Dust. In the last 24 hours, Pakistan and Poland have seen large fireballs. There was also a daytime fireball over central Illinois in the USA. Early morning of September 10th, Earth will move through a giant, ancient dust trail associated with the September ε-Perseid meteor shower. This encounter may cause a brief spike in meteor activity, producing sudden bright streaks across the sky. Active period: September 5–21. Peak: Around September 9–10, with a predicted activity boost around 1 AM on September 10th. The dust trail is believed to be ancient debris from past comet activity. The peak occurs close to the new moon (September 11th), meaning minimal moonlight and darker skies. Start: ~8:38 PM on September 10th (radiant rises in the east). Strongest: 1 AM–4 AM, when the radiant in Perseus is highest.

Predicted Entry of Meteoroid over Indian Ocean

2026, September 6. Indian Ocean. Pre Impact of a small celestial meteoroid discovery. Name of the object, CERNQ52. Its size is about 80 cm, 0.6 – 1.2 meters in diameter range. The object will enter Earth's atmosphere today at 18:35 (16:35 UT) over the Indian Ocean. This is the thirteenth case of a celestial body discovery before its collision with Earth. Predicted Entry Time: ~16:35 UTC (September 6). Location is roughly 1100km WNW of Broome, Australia and 1000 km ESE of Christmas Island. Melbourne Local Entry Time: ~2:35 AM AEST (overnight, Monday, September 7).

There has been an uptick in cetacean strandings in Papua New Guinea concerning Black Dolphins and a Beaked whale. This could be the result of submarine volcano activity in the Sea of Bismark. The above meteoroid is the second object in the "region" after the May event over the Arafura Sea. Then, in August, we had the Northern Territory, Gulf of Carpentaria, Groote Eylandt, pygmy blue whale stranding.

Overall Note: It's been quiet. Yes, there have been cetacean strandings and meteor activity globally, with pockets of linked events; however, overall, compared to other years, the slow trend continues. It will end sometime, as it does, but the flip side to this is a peaceful environment. There are unmonitored regions that continue to be blind spots for obtaining information, but usually they deliver some small signs. There was comet activity in the inner solar system that delivered some debris over the last year, so it's a wait-and-see scenario for how things unfold as the year goes on and the Earth's orbital path moves into further "trouble". Usually when I comment about it being "quiet" all hell breaks loose. It's important to say cetaceans are still dying from ship strikes, bycatch, entanglements, hunting and other manmade situations. I can only deliver what I'm seeing when mass whale strandings and clusters occur. 


Also: 2026, September 5. North Atlantic Ocean/Caribbean Sea. Seen from Puerto Rico, Trujillo Alto. Large Fireball. Time: between 7:04-7:05 pm, 23:05 UT. A notable meteor was seen northeast over the ocean just before sunset.

Long duration fireball over New Zealand

2026, August 30. New Zealand, North Island. Large fireball. (Sunday) Time: 7:43pm. Colour: green. Direction: passing West to East. At the moment, the flight time is 13+ seconds, and the preliminary trajectory has it over Bay of Plenty. There have been no AMS sound reports so far. Will update further as it was heading towards the ocean.

Meteor activity off the coat of Peru/Ecuador Region in Pacific Ocean

The map below shows bolide activity from July 1st to August 14th. During the period so far, I have the following strandings and other marine species deaths. 

2026, July 7. Peru, Lambayeque, San José Cove. A large female Humpback whale washed ashore dead in an advanced state of decomposition. Comes after reports of 250 sea birds, 6 sea lions, and other species found dead. Blamed on El Nino.  

2026, August 18. Peru, Playa Colán, Paita, Piura, Northern sector of Colán Beach, adjacent to the Olympic Perú Inc. plant facilities A Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), Subadult, approximately 10 meters in length. Specialists reported the whale was in an advanced state of decomposition upon discovery, indicating it had likely died days earlier offshore and drifted onto the beach. No definitive necropsy or signs of fishery interaction could be confirmed due to decay.

2026, August 24. Perú, Paita, Piura, Colán beach. A humpback whale calf was found stranded. This is the second stranding recorded recently in the area.


Update 202608224. Second wave of California/Mexico stranding could be underway. Below are yellow crosses denoting cetacean strandings. There was another large meteor not represented here. Even though it did happen before the stranding of a baleen whale it occurred too close in time for the whale that had been dead for some days. It does, though, indicate the amount of activity in the region. 2026, August 23. Canada, British Columbia, Strait of Georgia. Fireball. Time: around 03:34UT, 20:34PDT. Concurrent sound: Static/cracking/fizzing not super loud but audible. Delayed sound; Sounded like a distance firework reverberation. Faint sonic boom.

Mass bird deaths in New South Wales

Mass bird deaths of pelicans found dead have returned negative results for H5N1 avian influenza. Other causes, such as botulism, are still pending and will take some weeks. I will update if any further information comes forward. There could be many causes for these deaths. (All young birds, where are the adults?) Below are the only reports of meteor activity in the region. Interestingly, the large event on the 7th was the day the samples were taken. This can be taken out of the equation; however, it shows the level of activity around that time. For reference, see the 2024 April 24th post titled: (Mass bird deaths in New Zealand seven days after sonic boom).

2026, August 3. New South Wales, Orange. Fireball. A loud concurrent sound "pop" or deep clap hiss, and sizzle, zap from delayed sound. Time: 21:03 AEST - 2026-08-03 11:03 UT.

2026, August 6. South Australia, Blanchetown. Large Bolide as viewed from Brightsky Observatory. Time: 23:13:30ACST. Duration: 6 seconds.

2026, August 7. Northern Territory, Alice Springs. Large Bolide. Time: 18:30. Colour: green. Direction: west to east. Duration: +7 seconds.

2026, August (samples taken August 7). New South Wales, Menindee Lakes at Lake Cawndilla, approx. 90km SE of Broken Hill. 400 dead fledglings and juvenile pelicans.

Meteor Audio

I created a video of the whooshing noise from the Washington, August 14th meteor event. The audio was captured by a home ring camera and is extremely loud, which is common for such events. Other reports often describe these as crackling, screeching or a train or plane crashing. They are different than the bangs, booms, and explosions from electrophonic or delayed sonic booms. On most occasions when they do occur, witnesses find them frightening because they do come with physical symptoms caused by pressure changes and vibrations. The post below shows the infrasound readings from sensors across the state from this meteor.

Overland fireball explosion delivers data on meteor airbursts

2026, August 14. USA, Washington. Fireball. Overland. Not linked to the Perseids meteor shower. Sonic boom. Delayed sound propagated over 100km from event with concurrent signature exceeding double that distance. Time: around 07:47 UT.00:48. Travelling north. Seen in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington. Multiple fragmented events throughout the entry, with a highly possible meteorite fall. The sound also registered on infrasound instruments at Washington volcanoes, including Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens. Witness accounts included statements such as: The loudest thunder you’ve ever heard, was about 1.5-2 minutes delayed, two almost distinct claps, slightly vibrating windows, a loud boom that shook house about 30 seconds after we saw the light, it scared me and we just had a huge thunderstorm last night that wasn’t nearly as loud, Boom, thunder like sound followed by ground shaking, Low booming noise lasting roughly 5 seconds. Sounded like a whoosh & then a big boom. The impact was marked immediately by a bright white-blue flash across the whole sky, followed 4 minutes later by a dense, deep thud that felt like a shockwave had hit the whole house. I heard a fairly loud pop and a crackle. A deep thud around 1 minute from its sighting. Kind of a hum or buzzing.

Update: Preliminary NASA data: Illuminating phase was 77 to 45 km above the ground, entry speed: 14.5 km/s, average meteoroid diameter: 40 cm, initial weight: 77 kg, energy of the explosion:10,000 kg/TNT, meteorite fall - radar signs indicate that small fragments have reached the ground.

New Zealand update

Below are two additional fireballs recorded since July 26th. Please see the previous post below involving the other four. There have been three recorded large cetacean strandings since the 9th. 

2026, August 6. New Zealand, South Island east coast, Canterbury. Fireball. Region Seen: Canterbury, Otago and Wellington. Time: around 06:45 UT, 18:45NZST. Travelling N over coast.  

2026, August 9. New Zealand, Cook Strait. Fireball. Time: 06:18UT, 18:18NZST. Seen in Wellington, Nelson and Manawatū-Whanganui Regions. This was the sixth fireball recorded in New Zealand since July 26th. Please see the post below involving the other four. 

2026, August 9. New Zealand, South Island, Cook Strait, south of Palliser Bay, near Waimeha Camping Village. A juvenile humpback whale washed ashore dead.

2026, August 9. New Zealand, Waiheke, near the Kennedy Point wharf. A Minke whale carcass washed ashore.

2026, August 11. New Zealand, NW South Island, Carters Beach, Westport on the West Coast, just over two kilometres down the beach, south of the township. A large pygmy blue whale, 21.7 metres long and is believed to weigh about 20 tonnes. In a moderate state of decomposition. The whale was first spotted floating in the surf on Monday, August 10, before washing fully ashore on Tuesday, August 11.

Fourth fireball reported in New Zealand in as many days

2026, July 30. New Zealand, North Island, East Coast of Northland. Fireball. Time: 07:45:03. Duration: 4secs. Travelling SW north of Great Barrier Island.

Update: 20260805. The MAD issued in the post below for the July 28th meteor has been downgraded to a watch due to new trajectory components showing the meteor exploded over land. Meteorites have been recovered. The sonic boom was contained within landfall regions, and the one report from the South Island was false; therefore, Cook Strait was not affected by a marine disturbance.

Sonic Boom created by fireball in New Zealand

On the 26th, a large fireball was witnessed offshore of Christchurch that was seen over a large region. I wasn't overly concerned; however, this evening a second large fireball has created an extensive shockwave throughout the atmosphere. A Marine Animal Disturbance Alert should be noted for the region until further information is obtained. As with many coastal meteors, they can be harder to read in terms of their effects on the marine environment.

Preliminary Data: 2026, July 28. New Zealand, Lower North Island/Cook Strait. Time: 22:26:10. Filmed from Toatoa, rural Ōpōtiki (Bay of Plenty). Seen from regions: Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Canterbury, Hawke's Bay, Manawatū-Whanganui, Marlborough, Taranaki, Tasman, Wellington, Taranaki, Opiki. Kapiti. Sonic Boom: Sound generated in concurrent and delayed forms from two extensive explosions when meteor fragmented. At Wairarapa, there were reports of animal disturbance, including livestock and domestic animals. It flew right over Manakau, and then, about 2mins later, a loud, low rumble disturbed all the birds. Multiple Reports: Sounded like an earthquake, but there was no tremor. Animals outside went crazy. Cows across the road were going nuts. Multiple booms echoing off the hills. Sounded like thunder. Explosion was crazy!! Huge explosion/ rumble after. Sound was loud and went on for a while. Popping sounds amid the rumblings as well. Heard at Masterton, Gladstone, Eketahuna, Ōtaki,

There will be numerous reports from this event. The trajectory is not fully understood yet. 

2026, July 26. New Zealand, South Island, East of Christchurch over Southern Ocean. Fireball. Time: 17:51NZST, 05:49UT. Duration: 5+ seconds. Travelling south. It appears that the object fell over the sea off the East coast of Canterbury/Christchurch about 70 km offshore. Seen at Ormondville in North Island and Dunedin in South Island over 800km apart. Regions: Canterbury, Manawatū-Whanganui, Otago, Wellington. Witness on commercial flight: “Was spotted by our flight crew on approach into CHC this evening and left an ionized trail behind it for 5 seconds or so. Due to its remote sea location, no sonic boom was reported.

Update 20260730: Another fireball over the coast travelling towards the Tasman Sea. 2026, July 29. New Zealand, North Island, Auckland. Time: 20:37NZST, 08:37 UT. Travelling east. Seen in Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Hawke's Bay, Manawatū-Whanganui, Northland, Taranaki, Waikato.

Meteor airburst over cachalot habitat

2026, July 21. North Atlantic Ocean, 240km NE from the coast of Guyana. Airburst. Coordinates: (9.4N, 57.4W). Time: 01.14UT. Altitude: 31.5km. Energy: e = 3.2e10. -e = 0.11 or 110,000 kg/TNT. It was seen from San Juan, Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago, 470 km to the west. Notes: Central region of cachalot (sperm whale) habitat. As in previous posts, these events usually highlight increased overall activity in the given region. 


Sperm whales could very well be present at that location and time of year. Depth and Bathymetry (The "Drop-Off"): Coordinates: 9.4°N, 57.4°W (240 km NE of Guyana's coastline). Seabed Profile: This position sits directly over the Guiana Continental Slope / Deep Ocean Basin, where ocean depths rapidly drop into the 1,500 m to 3,500 m+ range. Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are deep-diving pelagic foragers that almost exclusively frequent waters deeper than 1,000 meters along continental slopes and oceanic trenches where their primary prey (deep-sea squid) aggregate. July / Summer Seasonality: Social Units (Females & Calves): Unlike mature adult males that migrate to polar latitudes during the northern summer, female social pods, nursery groups, and young males remain in tropical and subtropical waters year-round (between ~40°N and 40°S). Guiana Basin Field Data: Marine surveys off the Guianas (Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana) confirm that sperm whales are among the most frequently sighted pelagic cetaceans along the outer continental slope during summer months (May through September).

Pod of dolphin's re-strand in Western Australia

2026, July 21. Western Australia, Princess Royal Harbour, Albany Waterfront Marina, Anzac Peace Park. A mass stranding of approximately 12 pantropical spotted dolphins. The pod stranded at Albany Waterfront Marina on Tuesday. Over the next 24 hours, 11 died. Initial Stranding (Tuesday). One dolphin died and was removed. The remaining 11 were refloated by members of the public and returned to deeper water. Second Stranding (Wednesday morning): 10 dolphins re-stranded overnight. Seven died on the beach. The remaining three were humanely euthanised following veterinary advice.

Update 20260723: I checked meteor data over multiple sites and haven't found anything other than normal background incidents.

Western Australia mass dolphin stranding

2026, July 21. Western Australia, Princess Royal Harbour, Albany Waterfront Marina, Anzac Peace Park. A mass stranding of approximately a dozen dolphins occurred in shallow mud flats. All but one were refloated after a response involving public intervention. 

Will update later if significant information becomes available when I check meteor detection sites. It's too early to suggest a reason why; it could be bird flu, a simple navigation error or something else

There was an unrelated large meteor event in northwestern Australia on the 17th.

2026, July 17. Western Australia, Pilbara region, Gibson Desert, North Karlamilyi National Park/Telfer Township. Large Fireball/Meteor Airburst/Possible Meteorite Fall. Overland. Witness Location and Report: GPS co-ordinates exact; -23.1206183, 123.0419572, CSR WELL 22 - Historical landmark. DMS: 23°07'14.2"S 123°02'31.1"E. Georgia bore camp on canning stock route, few kms nearby. Sonic Boom heard approx 2mins later, heard rumble and distant boom. Colour: Blue, Light Blue. Direction: Travelling west. Time: 07:00 AWST. 23:00 UT Gibson Desert, NW Australia. Duration: ≈7.5s
