Update concerning the previous post: Impact location (6 Sep 2026 16:32:16.40 UTC). Wharton Basin / Mid-Indian Basin region. 13°51'17.7"S 116°22'49.5"E. The meteoroid entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Indian Ocean northwest of Australia at 16:07 UTC on September 6, 2026, about 7 hours and 22 minutes after its initial observation. The European Space Agency (ESA) estimated the object at 0.6–1.3 m (2.0–4.3 feet). Because of its small size, it posed no threat and burned up as a bright fireball in the upper atmosphere without causing damage or producing recoverable meteorites. It is also notable as potentially the first Aten-class near-Earth asteroid caught before impact, as previously predicted impactors belonged to the Apollo class. Initial entry dynamics derived from pre-impact astrometric tracking and impactor modelling indicate a velocity of approximately 14.3 km/s relative to Earth.
Also: Earth Passing Through Ancient Meteoroid Dust. In the last 24 hours, Pakistan and Poland have seen large fireballs. There was also a daytime fireball over central Illinois in the USA. Early morning of September 10th, Earth will move through a giant, ancient dust trail associated with the September ε-Perseid meteor shower. This encounter may cause a brief spike in meteor activity, producing sudden bright streaks across the sky. Active period: September 5–21. Peak: Around September 9–10, with a predicted activity boost around 1 AM on September 10th. The dust trail is believed to be ancient debris from past comet activity. The peak occurs close to the new moon (September 11th), meaning minimal moonlight and darker skies. Start: ~8:38 PM on September 10th (radiant rises in the east). Strongest: 1 AM–4 AM, when the radiant in Perseus is highest.
