Overland fireball explosion delivers data on meteor airbursts

2026, August 14. USA, Washington. Fireball. Overland. Not linked to the Perseids meteor shower. Sonic boom. Delayed sound propagated over 100km from event with concurrent signature exceeding double that distance. Time: around 07:47 UT.00:48. Travelling north. Seen in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington. Multiple fragmented events throughout the entry, with a highly possible meteorite fall. The sound also registered on infrasound instruments at Washington volcanoes, including Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens. Witness accounts included statements such as: The loudest thunder you’ve ever heard, was about 1.5-2 minutes delayed, two almost distinct claps, slightly vibrating windows, a loud boom that shook house about 30 seconds after we saw the light, it scared me and we just had a huge thunderstorm last night that wasn’t nearly as loud, Boom, thunder like sound followed by ground shaking, Low booming noise lasting roughly 5 seconds. Sounded like a whoosh & then a big boom. The impact was marked immediately by a bright white-blue flash across the whole sky, followed 4 minutes later by a dense, deep thud that felt like a shockwave had hit the whole house. I heard a fairly loud pop and a crackle. A deep thud around 1 minute from its sighting. Kind of a hum or buzzing.

Update: Preliminary NASA data: Illuminating phase was 77 to 45 km above the ground, entry speed: 14.5 km/s, average meteoroid diameter: 40 cm, initial weight: 77 kg, energy of the explosion:10,000 kg/TNT, meteorite fall - radar signs indicate that small fragments have reached the ground.

Airburst in Namibia

2026, June 11. Namibia, Etosha Pan, Etosha National Park. Airburst. Overland. Time: 02:00:58UT. Coordinates: (18.7S;16.1E). Altitude: 33.0 km/s. Energy: e = 3.2e10, -e = 0.11 or 110,000 kg/TNT. Velocity Components: NA.

There have been meteor reports in South Africa from eMalahleni, in the north, to Cape Town. 

Perfect place to locate meteorites.

2026, June 14. South China Sea, Seen in Brunei (Lambak to Sungai Akar) and Malaysia. A bright emerald green fireball lit up sky. Time: 8:33 PM. Duration 7 seconds and travelling NNW.

2026, June 16. South Africa, Zululand coastline, in the vicinity of 9 Mile Beach north of Sodwana Bay, within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. A large dead humpback whale washed ashore.

2026, June 16. USA, Washington. Two decomposed gray whales washed ashore, one near Moclips and another near Quinault Reservation.

2026, June 17. USA, Washington, Ocean Shores. Gray whale washed ashore.  

2026, June 17. USA, Oregon. Del Rey Beach State Park, just south of Del Ray approach north of Gearhart. A gray whale washed ashore.

Added strandings and meteor events

 2025, March 27. New Zealand, Dunedin. A Grays beaked whale washed ashore dead.

2025, April 2. USA, Washington State, north end of the Long Beach Peninsula. Dead Gray whale.

2025, April 3. New Zealand, Whanganui. Dead dolphin.

2025, April 4. USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Angel Island. A second dead Gray whale, an adult male, was reported floating east of Angel Island. The whale was towed to Angel Island State Park. Necropsy done. The carcass of the whale was in an advanced state of decomposition, which officials said indicated it had been dead for some time.

2025, April 4. USA, California, San Francisco, Fort Point Rock Beach. A third dead Gray whale that the remains were in an inaccessible location and caught in rocks offshore. The age and sex of the whale is unknown. There continues to be a significant number of gray whale sightings in San Francisco Bay as this species continues its northern migration to its Arctic feeding grounds.

2025, April 5. New South Wales, Sydney, near Ultimo. Fireball. Trime: (2.46am). A loud sonic boom and a brilliant flash of light.

2025, April 6. USA, Massachusetts, Yarmouth. Two dolphins were stranded and refloated.

2025, April 6. UK, Kent, Sheerness Beach, near Marine Parade. Dead dolphin.

2025, April 6. USA, Long Beach's Rainbow Harbor Golden Shore Drive and Shoreline Village, across from the Queen Mary. A minke whale that had been circling within Long Beach Harbor for much of the week unfortunately died.

2025, April 7. New Zealand, Tahanui Mahia in the northern South Island. A rare adult male Gray's beaked whale.

There was a meteor on 2025, April 5. Australia, New South Wales, Sydney, near Ultimo. Fireball. Time: (2.46am). A loud sonic boom and a brilliant flash of light.

There were two meteor airbursts, one in inland Australia and the other in Antarctica.

I will add other Asian, Indian and worldwide strandings and meteor events as they come in.

Good news for Gray whales in the North Pacific

"Unusual Mortality Event" declared over. 700 gray whales deaths were recorded off the coast from Mexico to Canada between 2019 and 2023. In a worrisome few years for the North Pacific gray whale population, hundreds washed up dead on shorelines along the West Coast leading to an estimated 30% decline in their population. During the years of the Unusual Mortality Event, 347 Gray whales were stranded along the coasts of California, Oregon and Washington; another 316 were reported in Mexico and 27 in Canada. The population numbers of the North Pacific Gray whale had declined during the Unusual Mortality Event, going from an estimated 20,500 whales in 2019 to 14,526 whales in 2023. Updated population numbers are expected to come out soon. Total calf production also declined, from around 950 calves counted in 2018 to an estimated 217 calves in 2022. In 2023, calf production increased slightly to 412 counted. Between 2018 to 2023 690 gray whales washed ashore from 2018 to 2023: 347 in the United States, 316 in Mexico and 27 in Canada.  Below is a map of the North Pacific Meteor Airbursts from 2018 to 2022. One of these had the equivalent energy of 49 million kilograms of TNT. They ranged from the Arctic Circle to California.

Tribal hunts need to stop! The Gray whales are under threat

The Makah Tribe in Washington has won approval from the US to resume whale hunting for the first time in 25 years. The indigenous communities and the US government are ignorant of the environment. Apparently, both parties have been naive for thousands of years. Governments need more information to guide their decision-making. Selfishness and ignorance are not a good mix.

This does not make environmental sense when the Gray whale population is under threat.
